Here is the uncomfortable truth about AI in analytics: AI agents acting on ungoverned data don't amplify your team's intelligence — they amplify your data quality problems at machine speed. The core prerequisite for any AI-powered analytics workflow is trusted data. You cannot trust data that is inconsistently defined, inconsistently tracked, and inconsistently interpreted across teams. The metric definition template

Every metric definition should include: Name (what it's called in every tool and document), Business question it answers, Calculation (exact formula), Numerator (what counts), Denominator (what it's divided by), Filters/exclusions (bots, internal users, test accounts), Time window (rolling 7-day, calendar month, etc.), Owner (who is responsible for its accuracy), Last reviewed date. A simple table in Notion or Confluence works well for teams under 50 people. At larger scale, data catalog tools like Atlan or Alation manage this more robustly.

The tracking plan as a governance foundation

The tracking plan is the contract between your product team and your analytics team. It documents every event that should be tracked, the properties that should be included, the naming convention, and which analyses each event enables. A tracking plan prevents the most common source of governance failures: ad-hoc event implementation where different developers implement the same concept differently. Format: a spreadsheet with columns for event name, event description, trigger (what user action fires it), required properties, optional properties, and the team/analyst who requested it. The tracking plan should be reviewed and updated whenever a new product feature ships.
